| Towards the end of pregnancy my teeth and gums ached. Sometimes my gums would bleed. My midwife told me that many women suffer from this, thats why they give you free dental care during your pregnancy and a year after your baby is born.
Anyone know why this happens? Isn't it so bizzare what pregnancy does to your body.

| A growing baby takes alot of calcium out of your teeth. It happened with all 3 of mine.
I was forever popping to the dentist to have my teeth seen too.

| I used an electric toothbrush throughout my pregnancy and I never had a problem with bleeding gums. The one I used is called Sonicare Elite. It massages your gums. I don't know if that actually helped or if I was just lucky. I went to the dentist once for a cleaning and checkup and he said everything looked great. | |

| Its called pregnancy gingivitus and is caused by all the hormoinal changes. You become less resistant to the bacteria that causes gum inflammation.
The best thing you can do is step up your oral hygiene, even if your gums are bleeding like mad, because when they are bleeding they are flushing out the plaque and bacteria!
Kellytimestwo, I also have the sonicare elite and its brilliant. They are quite expensive but worth it.
Oh and :goodluck: debbie. x

| I never had a single cavity until after my first baby- I went in for a routine check-up and found I had 3 cavities! I was shocked! So, with my daughter, I took special care to brush and floss and use Listerene every day... after my daughter was born I had a whopping 7 cavities!! I was devastated!! My dentist recommended ditching the Listerene (it can do more damage than good) and instead use a flouride mouth rinse every night, to help replenish the tooth enamal. So far I think things are alright. I have to make an appointment about 5 months in advance for a routine check-up, so I won't know what damage baby #3 has done to me until this fall. That's great that you guys get free dental care and frequent attention! I wish we were taken care of like that.... oh well! | |
